As surprising as it sounds, Dandie Dinmonts are in the hands of pet mill operators who care nothing about the dogs. The dogs live horrible lives until their breeding days are over.

With any luck at all, these dogs will wind up in the hands of caring people, and finally have an opportunity to live their lives in a loving environment.

So, when you surf the net and see a listing for "Breeders of Dandie Dinmont Terriers", how do you know with whom you are dealing? Is it a reputable breeder? Is it someone who will be there for you and the dog after the sale is completed, or is it a "back yard" breeder who thought it would be fun to have a litter of puppies or, worse still, a pet mill operator? How can you tell the difference?

the Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club of America (DDTCA) to inquire about obtaining a Dandie puppy from the DDTCA’s reputable breeders.   The Dandie Dinmont community is a small one. If you have the name of a breeder, ask her if she knows the name. She can point you in the right direction.

DO NOT shop at pet stores for a Dandie.  No caring individual would ever use a pet store as an outlet for selling puppies. If, when talking to someone, they tell you they can locate a Dandie for you and all you need to do is tell them what sex, color or age you're interested in, HANG-UP the phone. You are talking with a pet broker - someone who acts as a go-between for the pet mill operators.
